Narrow Seas

ADD TO WISHLIST >

A fast playing set of coastal forces naval rules designed for use with models from 1/300 to 1/1200. Book keeping is minimal, with speed and damage recorded for each vessel on a card through a series of Levels rather than keeping track of damage points and exact speeds.
As well as rules for gunnery, torpedo and depth charge attacks there are optional and additional rules covering anti submarine warfare, boarding actions and battles involving forces on land.

Data for over 200 classes and individual ships and over 70 aircraft types covering the navies of Great Britain, Germany, the United States, Japan, France, Italy, the Soviet Union, the Netherlands, Finland, Bulgaria, Romania and Tito’s Partisan navy are included.

My local group recently played a couple of games, but we added a bit more "structure" to the game as our grognards did not fully appreciate the free-wheeling play of cards as called for in the rules. We likely will make a few other adjustments, but overall this captures the frenetic combat of coastal actions in the dark much better than other rule systems recently released (rule name rhymes with "duel peas").

I also have a problem on how to create more ship data cards having bought the game. The blank ship card is protected and pdf. The ones provided are fine bot only cover a few boats.

So with the downloads comes a blank ship pdf, however, how do you edit it to update the picture of the ship so you can add the various weapons etc. Difficult to see how useful this is, which is a shame. You cannot load into a pdf editor as its password protected. Any thoughts on how people are using this? Many thanks

Hello, is there a rough scale range for the rules, i.e. 1" equals xx? Thx

Do I have to modify the measurements for movement and range if I use 1/300 ships?

we played with 1:300 boats and no modified ranges or adjusted movement. Range is not in scale with the models but it wouldn´t even if you use 1:700 models

Rules look great. Will be trying them out in January at Ayr Wargamers and will give a decent reaction/review then.

Over on Facebook there's an active Naval Gaming group and a smaller brand-new "1/600 and 1/1200 Coastal Wargaming" group, both of which the author, David Manley, is active and approachable in.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
