Rising Sun, 3rd edition

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

Rising Sun provides scenarios for the Admiralty Trilogy’s WW II tactical naval game system, Comand at Sea. Starting with Pearl Harbor, it covers the fierce surface, submarine, and air combats of the first half of the Pacific War, with detailed orders of battle, and historical accounts.

The original edition of Rising Sun was the first supplement published for Command at Sea, in 1994. Over the past twenty-plus years, new scholarship and access to previously unavailable sources (not to mention the designers’ own greater understanding) has allowed us to produce this vastly improved edition.

In addition to classic set-piece battles like Pearl Harbor or the midget submarine attack on Sydney, Australia, major campaigns like Coral Sea and Midway are presented as a series of linked scenarios, with possible variations and historical might-have-beens. Background information is provided to help the players place the battles in context.

Noted historian Jon Parshall, co-author of Shattered Sword: The Untold Story of the Battle of Midway, graciously wrote the foreword for this edition. His work, along with other researchers and authors, has helped us greatly in understanding Midway and the other battles published here.

Okay. Been waiting for this one for quite a while. To use this scenario book, I need the core rules, American Fleets and The Emperor's Fleet, correct?

There are some scenarios with the the Royal Australian Navy, the Royal Netherlands Navy and The Royal Navy so I would also recommend Rising Sun Form 10s for the ships from the other navys.

Timothy,

Thanks for the heads up; I hadn't thought about the ABDA forces.

Just to be certain, the Rising Sun 3E and the Form 10s are for use with the Command at Sea 4E rules?

Scott Chisholm

They're all current. Depending on your interests, the Form 10 book may have enough ships for you to manage without the Fleet volumes for now (and you want to buy it in any case because it will save you lots of set up time).

Evan,

Thanks. My latent OCD tendencies will probably have me purchasing everything. Fortunately for me, I have no WW2 miniatures.... ;-)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
