Yaah! Magazine and Complete Wargame #4

What makes our final issue of our first year so extraordinary?

To start with, there's the game, designed by Mark Holt Walker-- publisher, gamer, novelist, and mensch. Poland Strikes! is a standalone module in the Sticks and Stones series. The first entry, published by Flying Pig's sister company Tiny Battle Publishing, saw Soviets and Yankees fighting over precious land in Germany in post-nuclear 1987. While the USSR is distracted by all of this, Poland decides to settle the score with Hungary after years of escalating tensions along the border. With four scenarios and 88 counters gorgeously illustrated by wunderkind Christian Sperling (Neuschwabenland), it's a cold-war-goes-hot tactical combat game by the undisputed master of the genre.

That's what you'll find at the back of the mag, but how's about the front? Well, for starters, there's a lavishly-illustrated look at Frank Chadwick's hotly anticipated ETO series. Chadwick's designs include classics like Battle For Moscow and A House Divided, and are renowned for their elegant, approachable take on historical wargaming.

The ETO series builds on Moscow's core to tackle the entirety of World War II in Europe. It's a mammoth undertaking, and developer Lance McMillan was kind enough to give us a peak behind the curtain of the next masterwork from this gaming legend.

Speaking of legends, we were able to snag an interview with Steve Jackson. If you play games, chances are you've played one of his: Car Wars, Munchkin, Zombie Dice, GURPs, GEV, OGRE, the list goes on and on. Even one of these legendary games would be enough to secure his place in gaming history, and he's shown no signs of stopping. Mr. Jackson is a charming and playful interviewee. Tying in with the interview is a great appreciation of the big box edition of OGRE by writer Matt Foster, and tying in with that is a four-scenario campaign designed for Yaah! especially by Chuck Turnitsa.

We also interviewed Rachel Simmons, the innovative designer of Bonaparte at Marengo, Napoleon's Triumph, and Guns of Gettysburg. Our conversation touched on her design process, aesthetic sensibility, the challenges of self-publishing, her current projects, and her recent transition from male-to-female. Simmons lives up to her reputation as one of the most interesting and idiosyncratic designers in gaming, giving answers that are both thoughtful and thought-provoking. The interview is followed by wonderful appreciations of Napoleon's Triumph and Guns of Gettysburg written by Roger Leroux and Claudio Campuzano.

Our other articles are as eclectic as ever. Regular contributor Ania B. Ziolkowska writes about the third installment in Richard Berg's popular Men of Iron series, Blood & Roses. Your humble editor explores the dystopian future of the smash-hit sci-fi paranoia party game, The Resistance, while Norm Lunde writes about a future of a more realistic (and terrifying) variety with his piece on John Gorkowski's Breaking the Chains. Then, it's back to the past as John Burtt returns to our pages with a wonderfully crunchy piece on Hermann Luttmann's ACW game Stonewall's Sword. Speaking of Monsieur Luttmann, we'll also be presenting David Spangler's "A Day on Brea 7", a piece of fiction from the universe(s) of Hermann's solitaire sci-fi game Invaders From Dimension X!, published by our sister company Tiny Battle Publishing.

Something for everyone! And that goes for the scenarios, too! In addition to the fantastic four-part OGRE campaign we mentioned there's an official scenario for Panzer Grenadier designed exclusively for Yaah! by Avalanche Press, and a tumultuous skirmish for Commands & Colors: Napoleonics by Brad Hurst. The 1969 Damansky Island incident, in which tensions between China and the USSR exploded into armed conflict, is dramatized by Brad Smith via Firepower. And speaking of unusual battles, Charles Borrall gives us not one, but two different takes on one of the weirdest battles of double-ya double-ya two: the defense of Castle Itter by a scratch force of Americans, Germans (!), and French prisoners against SS die-hards. Not only does he give us his third Heroes of Normandie scenario in as many issues, but he also gives us the holy grail we've been chasing since day one: Advanced Squad Leader. That's nine scenarios altogether, and that's not including the four that come with Poland Strikes!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
